Water Safety Week
Each term, EwSwim runs a week-long program dedicated entirely to Water Safety. An initiative of AustSwim and YMCA NSW, Water Safety Week helps us all be better equipped to prevent and successfully respond to any dangerous situation in the water, with essential skills and knowledge.
Between 2002 and 2015, there were 128 drowning deaths of children in New South Wales aged under 5-years. These are frightening statistics and EwSwim wants to help stop it happening in Northern NSW.
During Water Safety Week we cover:
- Entries & Exits
- Signalling
- Treading Water
- Underwater Skills
- Floating & Sculling
- Survival Strokes
- Rescues & Emergencies (including fitting life jackets)
- Water Safety theory
Students are also encouraged to ask questions about Water Safety and discuss the concerns they have so that they – and their families – better understand threats and hazards of the water.
*During WSW, children may be asked to swim with regular clothing on (without goggles and cap) to create real-life treacherous situations in the water, and how to respond.
